Great Hackers Popular

Description:
This doesn't have that much to do with application development, but I didn't feel like starting a new category just for this link... In this article, the author, Paul Graham, does his best to define what makes someone a great programmer. I think he does a pretty good job describing what it's like being a programmer. I'm not fond of the term "hacker", though, as it implies a lack of professionalism where there is none.

Is Software Engineering an Oxymoron? Popular

Description:
I often tell people that my background in linguistics (and teaching writing) has prepared me quite well for a career in development. From my point of view, I have become a sort of expert at languages, natural or artificial, and am thus able to pick up programming languages quite quickly. This article supports such a view.

Making Wrong Code Look Wrong Popular

Description:
A friend once told me not to use inline comments to document my code. His theory was the code should be written so that any reasonably trained programmer could get the gist of the code without any documentation. This, in his opinion, was accomplished using coding conventions such as Hungarian notation. I've always felt that there was truth in his words and aspire to write such code (using obvious function and variable name, for example). This article gives some additional, good advice on how to achieve that goal.

XOOPS Popular

Description:
XOOPS is a Content Management System (CMS) that supports modules (or plug-ins) for expanded functionality. Of all the open source CMS systems I've ever reviewed (not that many, but several), this is the one I like the most (and used to develop this site). From the XOOPS front page: "XOOPS is an extensible, OO (Object Oriented), easy to use dynamic web content management system written in PHP. XOOPS is the ideal tool for developing small to large dynamic community websites, intra company portals, corporate portals, weblogs and much more."
